History of the First Amendment - The Puritans and Pilgrims in Massachusetts (1)

The Pilgrims came to America in 1619 and were eventually absorbed by the Puritans. The Puritans first arrived in 1629. They felt they were the right people at the right place and at the right time to show the world what could be done by a people totally dedicated to doing things God's way. According to their theology, the established a church-state and began to enforce all of the Ten Commandments and their version of theology. They denied others what they came to America for. They persecuted, in every way they could under the circumstances, those whom they labeled "heretics."

Their experiment soon proved futile. Corruption had set in by 1660, in spite of their efforts. After hanging 4 Quakers, England sent word that there would be no more killing of others because of their religious beliefs. Nontheless, the Puritans persecuted those whom would not bow down to their false theology in every way they could.

One must understand the history of the Puritans in New England (as well as other facts which will be taught in these episodes) before he can fully understand the story of the drafting and ratification of the First Amendment.

This begins the study of the American application of the biblical principle of separation of church and state. Since the beginning of the church, Christians believed and practiced separation of church and state. They paid dearly for this practice.

In the fourth century certain religious leaders were seduced by Constantine to join hands with the state. Over a thousand years of the worst persecutions imaginable followed as religion worked hand in hand with the state to enforce all ten of the commandments. Anyone who did not bow down to the theology of the state church was imprisoned, horriby tortured, burned alive, drowned, buried alive, beheaded, etc. as the state religion tried to stamp out all forms of what they called "heresy."

The Protestant churches followed the theology of their mother in this matter and continued the persecution. However, forces and circumstances were such in the American colonies that the final result was the first nation, the second civil government behind the colony of Rhode Island, to have religious liberty.

1-Introduction to the biblical principle of separation of church and state

Christians have always been persecuted. Our Lord told Christians that they would be persecuted. He was cricified. His apostles were, with the exception of John, martyred. John was exiled. Rome persecuted Christians horribly. After church and state wed under Constantine, true Christians and others labeled as heretics by an heretic-the Roman Catholic Church-were imprisoned, tortured in the most horrific ways conceivable, and killed by beheading, drowning, burning, etc. The persecutions were continued by established Protestant churches. In America, established Protestant churches, including the Puritans (Congregationalists) in New England and Anglicans in the Southern States persecuted dissenters, the chief of whom were the Baptists. The Baptists in the colony of Rhode Island became the first civil government in the history of the world to have relgious liberty under God.

Out of the theological warfare in the colonies came the first nation in the world with religious freedom, the United States of America.

Apostasy at the end of the church age. The church will reign with the Lord. Conclusion to the biblical principles concerning the church

The Bible reveals that, at the end of the church age, the Lord will be outside the Laodicean church. The final result of the apostasy will be the great ecclesiastical harlot spoken of in Revelation 17 and 18. Ecclesiastical Babylon (apostate Christendom, the harlot whom many biblical scholars conclude will be headed up under the Papacy and which will at that time condone every iniquity of the rich and will be corrupted to the core by commercialism, wealth, and luxury) will be destroyed by political Babylon, that is by the nations.

True Christians have the ultimate hope: they will reign with the Lord. This should be a cause of great rejoicing as well as incentive to be responsible members of the body of Christ and to mke sure that every effort is made to glorify God and assure that a church remains totally under Christ in every way. The Holy Spirit is now calling out, not the subjects, but the co-heirs and co-rulers of the kingdom.

The doctrine of the church was revealed by the Apostle Paul in his New Testament writings. A church is made up of visible people who have made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. On the other hand, since one cannot see the spiritual condition of a person's heart, in one sense a church, which is a fellowship of believers, is invisible. Therefore, one can be in a visible church, yet unregenerate, lost, and destined for hell. The Roman Catholic "church" is not the only church. In fact, the author questions whether the Roman Catholic "church" is looked at as a church by the Lord Jesus Christ, the only One who can make the determination.

This study gets into the biblical teaching on the definition, organization, and purposes of a church.

This concludes the teaching on "God is the God of Israel." Included in this teaching on this segment is a study of the threefold relation of Christ's coming" to the church, to Israel, and to the Gentile nations.

To the church the descent of the Lord into the air to raise the sleeping and change the living saints is set forth as a constant expectatioin and hope.

To Israel, the return of the Lord is predicted to accomplish the yet unfulfilled prophecies of her national regathering, conversion, and establishment in peace and power under the Davidic Covenant.

To the Gentile nations the return of Chrsit is predicted to bring the destruction of the present political world system, the judgment of Matthew 25.31-46, followed by world-wide Gentile conversion and participation in the blessings of the kingdom.

Upon violating the conditions of the Palestinian Covenant, the nation was first disrupted and then cast out of the land. A temporary dispersion was prophesied, to come before the extended dispersion. A restoration and conversion of Israel was also prophesied. This episode covers these topics and the fulfillment of the prophesies of dispersion. Israel has not yet been restored and converted, although the nation Israel was born in a day as prophesied.

That promise was for all time and no such promise was ever given to any other nation. To suggest that Israel has only the rights God has given to all nations is a shocking rejection of clear biblical teaching.

This segment was unconditionally given to Abraham and to his seed in the Abrhamic Covenant. That covenant is in seven distinct parts; and in it, God made three kinds of promises.
